The Netherlands Antilles (Nederlandse Antillen) was a former constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, consisting of several Caribbean islands including Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba. The country was dissolved on October 10, 2010, resulting in Curaçao and Sint Maarten becoming autonomous countries within the Kingdom, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba became special municipalities of the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Antillean guilder (Antilliaanse gulden) was introduced in 1828 and remained the official currency until April 1, 2025.
During World War II in 1940, the guilder was decoupled from the Dutch guilder and pegged to the US dollar at a rate of approximately 1.88585 guilders per US dollar.
The peg was adjusted in 1971 to 1.79 guilders per US dollar, a rate maintained until the currency was replaced.
The Netherlands Antillean guilder was also the currency of Aruba until 1986, when Aruba introduced its own florin.
The guilder was used primarily in Curaçao and Sint Maarten after the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, while Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba adopted the US dollar in 2011.
On April 1, 2025, the Netherlands Antillean guilder was officially replaced by the Caribbean guilder (Caribische gulden) at par (1:1).
A transition period until June 30, 2025, allowed both currencies to circulate, with the guilder exchangeable at banks until 2055.
The first banknotes were introduced in the early 19th century, replacing a reliance on gold and silver coins, which were often counterfeited.
Coins and banknotes featured local symbols and were issued by the Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (Bank van de Nederlandse Antillen).
The currency was backed by full foreign exchange reserves, maintaining confidence despite regional economic challenges.
The economy of the Netherlands Antilles was based on three pillars: tourism, oil refining, and financial services.
Curaçao had a significant oil industry, port activities, and financial sector, with Willemstad hosting one of the world’s largest ports in the 20th century.
Other islands specialized in tourism.
The economy was highly dependent on imports and external trade.
The Netherlands provided annual financial aid focused on law enforcement, education, governance, and sustainable economic development.
Despite positive economic growth and increasing international reserves in the early 1980s, the government finances were complex and often troubled by unpaid obligations between central and island governments.
The dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 led to significant political restructuring.
Curaçao and Sint Maarten became autonomous countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba became special municipalities of the Netherlands, adopting the US dollar as their official currency in 2011.
The introduction of the Caribbean guilder in 2025 aims to replace the Netherlands Antillean guilder for Curaçao and Sint Maarten, providing a modernized and stable currency framework.
Issuing Bank: Bank of the Netherlands Antilles (historical), now replaced by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
Currency Peg: The guilder was pegged to the US dollar at 1.79 ANG = 1 USD until replacement.
Legislation: Currency and monetary policy were governed under the Kingdom of the Netherlands and local laws.
Transition: The Caribbean guilder’s introduction includes a phased transition with continued acceptance of the old guilder for a limited period.
